Simon's Guestbook

The guestbook has been deactivated because of a jerk who was posting Spam in the guestbook. He or she was posting links to sites selling medications - I think everyone understands that 99.99% of such sites are bogus, particularly those "advertised" via Spam.

After I removed the ability to post a web site address in the guestbook, this jerk began posting nonsense entries in the guest book - up to 8 of them a day.

Consequently I have deactivated the guestbook. You can still read the entries but you can not add an new entry.

I am writing a new guestbook program which will at least minimize abuse. I expect to have it done in about a week or so (today is July 28, 2006)

This guestbook was not created as a place for people to post Spam! I feel that people who use guestbooks and other areas, such as message boards, to post Spam are lower than the scum that grows on a festering pile of garbage. If they want to have information on a web site, let them create their own sites and then get traffic to the site by legitimate means - not by Spamming other web sites!

To the person posting all the garbage on this guestbook - the new guestbook will log IP addresses and if you, or anyone else, abuses the guestbook, I will report the activity to your ISP and pursue every available legal option to punish you for the misuse of this web site.

Also - your english is so bad that you should be embarrassed to use it. I guess that does not matter to you, considering that it appears you have nothing better to do than spread rubbish around the Internet - such a waste of time!

The new guestbook will also take steps to prevent SpamBots from harvesting Email addresses. I have removed all email addresses from the guestbook entries shown on this page as a temporary measure.

AJ was diagnosed with diabetes nearly a year ago. He was on 10 cc of insulin 2X day until about 3 months ago when his glucose readings began to look normal (4.5 instead of the usual 20). Since then, I have been taking his glucose readings 2x day to ensure he is at a safe level, and if its abit high, I give him only 3-5 cc of insulin (unless its 16 or more and then he gets the full 10cc). The only concern I have for him (he'll be 7 on June 29) is his weight. He is 17lbs and no matter what, he doesn't seem to be losing any.

P.S I discovered he had diabetes when he has lost a pile of weight, and then after I moved and he seemed happier, his diabetes seemed to have improved.

Simon's story is very moving. Thank you for sharing the information you have gathered while dealing with feline diabetes. My kitty Harley (8 1/2yrs young) was just diagnosed with diabetes 6 days ago. I found your site while reading articles on felinediabetes.com. I was surprised to find this much info. I was there looking for support and now know that I am going to need it. It is invaluable to know that I can get it on these websites. It is also comforting to be able to find answers to my questions without having to call my vet every 5 minutes. Thank you all who contribute to these websites.

Oscar was recently diagnosed with diabetes, and as a result, he has developed feline neuropathy. I am at my wits end over this, and have decided to my own testing. My one problem is I am getting levels, that are in U.S. readings, do you know how to convert them to Canadian.
Thank you. I have found your articles, very informative.

Thanks for taking so much time to do this. I am new at this and can use all the help I can get.I am not sure my cat will make it through this. My vet thinks ther is more going on than the diabetes. I guess time will tell. my kittys name is Bobcat. He is 9 and 6 months ago was a wild and crazy kitty. He had a rabies shot which lowered his resistance and since then it has been one thing after another. he had a blood test back then and was not diabetic then. he is now.

I am a petsitter and have my first client with a kitty needing insulin injections -- I have printed out, read, and highlighted all your info! What a wonderful website you have -- and the way you wrote it, even a newbie like myself feels so much better about taking care of the diabetic kitty. I do have an appt. with my vet to show me exactly how to give the injection (they told me it's a cinch), but with your step-by-step instructions, personal comments and thoughts, I feel oh-so-much-better! Thank you so very much! And when I read the Rainbow Bridge poem, I had tears running down my face, thinking of my own PrettyKitty, who passed on at age 18 last September. And there are a few other animals that I believe are waiting for me there as well. (oh pshaw - look at me, I'm bawling again just thinking about them). Anyway, thank you.

Hello, Thanks for your informative website. Im an American living in Germany!! My cat Princess was diagnosed with Diabetes last week and I had a hard time because I was afraid of giving her shots. Things are working out after 8 days and Im glad I didnt give up right away. The 300euro I spent at the vets office was a schocker but I think now that she is stable things will get better. She is starting to give me a bit of a fight with the shots and I think its because shes feeling better. I will try to change my technique. I may be giving them to slowly and that hurts more. Glad to see Im not alone with my cats ailment. Its good to read tips from others!! Will look in again soon... God bless, Kathleen

Loved all the detail and humor. My Indie has been diabetic since 1997 (he's 15) - for the last 3 years on 19 units of Humulin-U. He crashed this week and went hypoglycemic. Thru the efforts of the Emergency Vet clinic and later my Vet, he is doing much better. It has been 5 days without insulin, just maybe he no longer needs it (we'll see). Originally he was on a jugular catheter for daily testing - 5 days. Now we will test every other day or so at the Vets. Since the episode he is only on CANNED food - Hill's WD. NO MORE DRY!!! Is Testing with a glucometer as easy as giving daily injections turned out? (Also - they said the shoulders was not an optimal place to inject -- they recommended mid back to the left and hind quarter on the back to the right). By the way, his LOW when he crashed was 31!!!!!!

Very sorry for your loss. Simon sounds like a true sweetie.

Our sphynx Jock has just gone from phase 1 (useless Glipizide) to phase 2 (insulin injections and weekly calls to the vet) to phase 3 (glucometer) as his diabetes has proved to be quite severe and less predictable than some.

I ordered the Glucometer today (the new Freestyle Mini from Therasense uses only 0.3microliters) and we'll be using it to crank up Jock's dosage more safely than the last time.

Thanks for the detailed instructions and the good wishes. You remain an inspiration to sugarcats and their humans everywhere.

My Doctor put me on 15 units of the Humulin NPH twice a day. So, my wonderful kitty and me are taking the same insulin. Needless to say, this week has been very hard on me. I learned more from you, then I did from the vet or my medical Doctor. Thanks for being there for me!!

Thank you for taking the time to inform those of us with diabetic cats re. the benefits of home testing. I'd decided to do this for our cat Harry, but almost too late. Last week he suddenly became hypoglycemic and we were very fortunate to find this out in time to prevent a disaster. Now he doesn't need insulin, but we are taking him to the vet every few days for testing. I'm not sure whether I should start testing him at home just in case he becomes diabetic again; this happened one other time. Anyway, I do appreciate the advice you've given on this subject.

Hi! I home test my cat "Rudy" as well. He is 12 years old and was diagnosed about 9 months ago. He was doing wonderfully on 13 units twice a day (I know that seems like alot!) until two days ago he was just not right and looking quite ill again. I've tested him 4 times today (on his rear paw) and I have upped his dose to 15 units, he is doing much better and his appetite is back and he is purring and talking to me again, what a relief! I always keep a close eye on him ( I was a vet tech for 5 years which is quite helpful) Thank you for your web site! I wish I had come across it a long time ago for it is very informative and hits all the key concerns that people wish their vet could tell them!!

He was showing all of the classic signs--vomiting, couldn't get enough to drink or eat, dull and lethargic, etc.). Well, after just 3 days of insulin, his blood sugar is normal (125!). The vet says we need to watch to make sure it doesn't get too low. Tigger is such a brave, stoic little guy--I wish he didn't have this disease, and I wish he didn't have to go through these daily shots. Anyway, thanks for having this great site--it's a comfort, especially in these early days, because I am kinda scared that I'm going to do something wrong, or Tigger will crash--you know. Anyway, great to 'meet' all my fellow pet moms and dads. We're in this together...

Want to thank you for this wonderful site. Because of you we were able to figure out how to test our cat who is diabetic as am I. My vet wouldn't tell us how to check for sugar but when we took it tonite based on your instructions, we found our cat was very very high. He has been very sick for a few days. We gave him a small dose of insulin and within an hour he had perked up. Now that I know where to test him I will do it regularly instead of taking him to the vet every two weeks which is very expensive. I believe we can control it much better this way. Thanks again.

This is a very good site. the only thing I would like to see here now is the blood sugar range for cats. Since I myself have been diabetic for 36 years I can only imagine what it must be like for you to test your cat. One Touch Ultra now has a sip machine that counts down from 5 seconds. Just thought you would like to know that too.
Once again thank you for a very very good site and the information you have put into it.

The love of my life(perhaps more than my husband)is my cat
Simone. Last month I found out she was diabetic and had the
same reaction you described. She has brightened my life for
17 years and I'm hoping for at least 7 more. I can't wait to try home testing, as the only suggestion our vet gave was urine strips, which would be difficult as we have 2 cats.
Our vets have been very helpful - we found Humulin was not at all effective for Simone and I order Beef insulin from Tanneytown pharmacy. Everyone at the vet's office knows her name and always ask about her condition. Thanks again for all the great info!

I diagnosed my cat "Dak" when he was 5 years old. He is now almost 17. I thought I would mention this because diabetes is not a death sentence. With monitoring of food intake, urine output and noticing changes in your cats behaviour, most cats will live a normal life span. Keep up the good work everyone. Your feline friends really appreciate it.

We have a good-hearted vet who knows the basics, but apart from encouraging me to learn how to home test, hasn't been much help. Your step-by-step instructions, simple and clear record-keeping, and background information have given me the foundation to feel like we can beat this thing. Your site is terrific, and full of good information for the cat lover who just learns his cat has diabetes, to one who has been attempting for over a year to bring his cat's diabetes under control. My dear buddy, Howard, was a fragile diabetic who enjoyed only a few months of time when his diabetes was controlled, then he suddenly discovered it was time to cross the Rainbow Bridge. That was just one week ago today, and I am still grieving deeply for him. My vet (a terrific, compassionate woman) sent me a sympathy card in which she included the original story of the Rainbow Bridge. It gives a beautiful message that I choose to believe. I long for the day when Howard and I will be reunited and he will once again respond to my invitation to "give me a kiss."

The site looks good, Simon. You've done a great service for all with this site. Oh, you too, Bob! My friend, Tarma, was diagnosed 3 months ago. We still do not have him well regulated. The vets suspect somogyi effect - Tarma tolerated four 12 hour glucose tests and one 24 hour test in the last 6 weeks. If not for your site, I would likely still be waiting for the Vet to come up with another solution.

I got results showing the effect and am working to obtain PZI for him. I should know in a few weeks if the request is approved... things are a little different here in Canada.

My cat T.C. is dying of Aids & diabets. He became sick last August. We decided not to treat him because a trip tp the Vet is a tramatic event. He weighed (most o his life) around 20-22 pounds and the vet would have to put him under to clip his nails because it was so bad for him. After we were given the different treatments, we decided that with his aids and age that he would live longer without the stress of vet visits and shots. Our vet was so kind and after we made our decision he said that he would have done the same thing. The vet said that T.C. would not have lived more than 3 or 4 months. It has been a year and he is slipping away from us. Like SugarCat, he has been a blessing to everyone he has known.

What a great site! Thai was a diagnosed diabetic for about 3 weeks and I was up to 11 units of insulin twice a day when I ended up staying up all night with him due to hypolglycemia. Observation of behavior is not enough! My vet did not know about ear testing and showed me how to tourniquet an arm and use a needle. All we got at home was big bruise on Thai's arm and a headache for me.
The morning after the hypoglycemia attack I searched the web and found some great websites on ear testing. So much better than observation or urine testing. Keep the faith, Simon.

Simon,

A lovely job, beautiful pictures. I am on my second trip with diabetes, this time with CRF. My Mum looks after me w4ell, but she will not let me eat what I like. I have just had a tooth out and my teeth cleaned - they look more like a kitten's teeth now and I have to put up with having them cleaned EVERY day. I have been a CRF/diabetic for coming up on 18 months now. I know my life has been much more comfortable since my Mum discovered the FDMB (Carolyn, a lovely Vet, gave her the address). But I'm still not keen on ear pricks except when Mum gives me glucose after pricking. I loooove glucose.

Found your site so informative I've added to my "favorites" list. Zoozoo was diagnosed on December 28th and we are lucky enough to have found a vet that a.) treats only cats; b.) has several diabetics she is currently treating; c.) is willing to take steps to avoid problems (i.e. we've started the process of obtaining all beef PZI insulin as efforts to lower Zoozoo's readings have failed.) I thank you for taking the time to post all this information. Once given the news of diagnosis, it's so scary and some of the information on other web sites is presented in such a way that it scares you even more. Hopefully, Zoozoo, our vet and myself will continue to work together to get Zoozoo's levels under control and he will live a long healthy life.

Thanks again!

I haven't tried to test my cat myself, yet. I am trying to get as much info as possible on it. Vet cost are so high here in CA, I can't take him in for routine glucose checks. Thanks for your info on the procedure and the Bayer glucometer.
Mickey is a 12 year old pound-kitty. I got him at age 4 weeks. He has been on insulin for 2 years (PZI seems to be his insulin of choice).
Thanks again,
Carolyn and Mickey

Hi Bob and everyone,

Well, my Batboy was diagnosed yesterday and received his first injection today. As someone else wrote, I am feeling terribly alone and scared right now. Thanks for all the information you've provided - I have A LOT of reading and learning to do. Talk about cramming for the big test!! If anyone would like to chat, especially from the Baltimore area, please email me. I would appreciate your input, knowledge and shoulder.

Bob.....Thank you so much for your beautiful web site and for all your great input to the FDMB.....

My sweet MOWAB(GA) had her DX on January 19,2000 and she left this earth life on April 5, 2000 after a painful and couragous battle. I have never been so devastated in my life. I still cry each and every time I think of her(which is always) or see her photos (which are everywhere!!). She was my baby and a piece of my sole.....

Hug Simon and all your babies for me. Thanks again for all you do. Marti and MOWAB(GA)

Hi Simon, Love your site and your message. I found your site whilst playing with the mouse and kept it open on the pooter so the bean could see it. Incidentally I'll share my insulin with you any time. Tell Bob my mum enjoys reading your comments and that the first computer she had anything to do with took up a whole floor, so I guess that makes her an antique! I think I'll call my site FD & Humour as long as my twin Lord Louis (do you mind) doesn't get in first and name it something regal. Keep posting on the board. Mandy, the twin Louis and the Beans.

I wish that I had read this months ago. I don't need to
warm Ben's ear either. Ben is a hard cat and has a red flag
on his vet's folder. They wear long gloves to handle him.
Ben, don't you know that you are a lion! I did get a low
reading yesterday and started to panic. Then, I retested and
found it to be the usual number. Ben isn't too happy with
my pricking him at times. I still have questions about
why I will get different numbers from day to day. It makes
it hard to regulate him. During the summer, he didn't eat much so the numbers have been in the 200-300. Now, that
summer is almost over, the numbers are going up again.
Maintaining a sense of humor is difficult at times.
-Thanks for your info and work.....Sharon, Ben, and Natasha.

I am a regular user of the board since Felix was diagnosed in March. His vet used the words Euthanasia one too many times while discussing the diagnosis and I quickly found another vet. At first I thought home testing would be impossible, but Felix is a little love and snuggles in my lap while I take just a bit from his little ear. He doesn't even flinch at shot time. Simon is an adorable lamb. What a lovely tribute to be able to design this web site and a great service to others. Just wanted to let you know how much I have enjoyed reading it. Lets all keep trying to educate our vets about home testing.

Great site, Simon! My mom keeps promising me a site of my own, but then she bought this house for us and now all she does is drill & hammer & stuff.

I think that my site is much more important. You are one lucky kitty!

I am going to send my picture as soon as mom gets it scanned (boy, is she in trouble with me!). I look quite beautiful, of course. Mom says I'm conceited and a princess, but it's her fault. Every morning before she goes to work, I make her hold me up in front of the mirror and say "Who's the prettiest girl in the whole world? And the smartest?"

If she doesn't do this, I nip at her calves until she does! All her friends make fun of her... tee hee!

Purrs,

Thanks so much for making this site. I've been wanting to home test and your info. has been a big help. I, too, have several cats and they free feed. However, Munchkin (my sugarbaby) has always been an outcast and so oftentimes, eats by herself. Recently, I've cut back on carbs and inc.
protein for her. I am so anxious to start home testing. I've already made some calls to locate the Bayer Elite XL.
Again, thanks.

Simon,

You're sure a handsome guy! I think Rudy has competition! And this site is looking great.

Tova...

As for the Bean (Julie):

Rudy was diagnosed January 11th, 2000. He's currently on 2.0 units BID of UK PZI. He eats 2/3 a can of W/D (5.5 oz can) for breakfast and dinner and has the balance of each can as a pre-peak snack. Yum Yum!!

He's regulated (more or less)and is holding his own at a whopping 10 lbs.

As for Miss Tova, she's been honeymooning for a couple of years. She had transient diabetes brought on by the prednisone she took to control her IBD.
